Sales tax settings

If your event is subject to sales tax, you can enable it per event and choose how it's handled at checkout.

Enabling sales tax

  1. Open your event and go to Payment settings
  2. Under Sales tax, select Yes
  3. Enter your tax rate as a percentage (e.g. 8.25 for 8.25%)
  4. Choose whether to pass the tax on to buyers or absorb it yourself

Pass on vs. absorb

Pass on — the tax amount is added on top of the ticket price. A $50 ticket with 10% tax shows as $55 at checkout (with the tax shown separately).

Absorb — the ticket price you set is treated as tax-inclusive. The buyer pays exactly what you listed; the tax comes out of your revenue.

How it appears at checkout

When tax is passed on, buyers see a line item breakdown:

  • Ticket subtotal
  • Sales tax (your rate)
  • Total

When absorbed, buyers see only the ticket price — no additional line items.

A note on tax compliance

Matter Tickets can collect and display sales tax at checkout, but it doesn't file tax returns or remit taxes on your behalf. You're responsible for determining whether your event is taxable in your jurisdiction and for remitting collected taxes to the appropriate authority. When in doubt, consult a tax professional.
